30 second game guide
Bring’em Out: Santa Clara Broncos 16-11 (6-4 WCC) vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs 17-9 (7-3 WCC) at the McCarthey Athletic Center, Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
Watch for: The Bulldogs to avenge their loss to Santa Clara earlier this season. It doesn’t bode well to beat Gonzaga and expect it to happen again in the same season. In fact, a WCC opponent hasn’t beaten the Zags twice in the same season since 1997 (San Diego did three times, including the WCC Tournament). However, we’ve seen so many of GU’s prestigious streaks end during this campaign already. I do believe this won’t be one of them Thursday night.
Fear: Who else? Kevin Foster. We told you to keep an eye on him the last meeting, and all he did was go off for a career-high 36 points in the 85-71 bashing of the Zags back in January. The good thing about Gonzaga, is that it’s tough to burn them twice. Foster will most-likely be double-teamed and swarmed for the most part (like Pepperdine’s Keion Bell) which will force other Broncos to step up. That said, locking down Foster won’t equal a win for GU. Five Santa Clara players scored in double-figures last time, so it’s going to have to be a collaborative defensive effort for 40 minutes if the Bulldogs want to win this game.
Respect: Gonzaga on its home court. Sticking with the theme of not making the same WCC mistake twice in the same season…I don’t see the Zags losing twice on their own court to conference foes. GU is down this season, but not that down. Unless the Gaels made two trips to the McCarthey in the same year, I don’t believe any other team has the capability to beat Gonzaga more than once, especially with that second game being played in Spokane. To make a short point long, the Bulldogs do not lose this game Thursday.
Random Stuff: The West Coast Conference is wide open once again, after San Diego upset Saint Mary's Wednesday night, 74-66. The Gaels are now just one game ahead of the Bulldogs in the standings. If Gonzaga wins its final four WCC games (which would include SMC), the Zags would share the conference championship. GU has won 23 of the last 26 meetings against the Broncos. Santa Clara is one of only two WCC teams (Saint Mary’s is the other) to ever win in the new Kennel. The last time it happened was in 2007.
