30 second game guide
Bring’em Out: No. 25 (Coaches Poll) San Diego St. (1-0) at No. 11 Gonzaga (2-0) at the McCarthey Athletic Center, Tuesday at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
Watch for: How Gonzaga looks against its first real opponent. It’s been great watching the Zags run the score up on two less-talented teams, but Tuesday’s game will most likely have a much different feel. Mark Few will get his first chance to see how the new guys respond in pressure situations going up against a ranked team in the Aztecs.
Fear: Steven Gray has really taken this leadership role and flourished. With Matt Bouldin out of the picture, Gray was the natural choice to take control of this year’s squad. He won’t make waves vocally, but his play through the first couple of contests (21 ppg 7.5 rpg 8.5 apg) is proving he’s ready to shoulder the load. We’ll see if he shows up on the big stage.
Respect: The Aztecs are traditionally a very blue-collar, athletic team and it looks as though they haven’t changed much. Beating Long Beach State in its opener 81-65, SDSU is coming off a 25-win campaign and first round exit in the NCAA Tournament. The Aztecs all five starters from that team, which in itself is a scary thought. Get ready for a good ol’ fashioned heavy weight battle in Spokane Tuesday night.
Random Stuff: This will be just the second meeting ever between these two teams. The last time was back in 1960 (GU won 72-69). This is just the first of five (maybe six) ranked opponents Gonzaga will face in its non-conference schedule.
