McLEAN, Va. – Gonzaga University, which finished 12th in the final USA Today coaches basketball poll last spring, enters the current season ranked 14th in the preseason balloting released Thursday.
The University of Kentucky is No. 1 with 16 of the 32 first-place votes and 767 points.
Gonzaga received 270 points to edge Virginia Commonwealth for 14th. The Bulldogs are 64 points behind No. 13 Memphis, the Zags and Tigers squaring off in Memphis Feb. 8 for ESPN College Game Day.
The Bulldogs return two starters and nine letterwinners off a team that went 32-3 a year ago, ran the table in West Coast Conference play and earned its inaugural No. 1 seed into the NCAA Tournament.
The Zags open the season Oct. 25 with an exhibition game at home against Simon Fraser University, and tipoff the regular season Nov. 9 when Bryant University visits the McCarthey Athletic Center for the first of four straight home games to start the season.
