FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Gonzaga University women’s basketball team will host the University of Idaho in the opening round of the 2013 Preseason Women’s National Invitational (WNIT) Tournament, Friday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. PT, organization officials announced Tuesday.
Depending on the outcome against the Vandals, the Bulldogs will then either play Georgia State University or the University of Tennessee-Martin, Sunday, Nov. 10.
The WNIT semifinals are set for Thursday, Nov. 14, with the championship game Sunday, Nov. 17. The championship contest will be televised on CBS Sports Network at 1 p.m. PT.
Gonzaga is coming off its fifth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and its ninth-straight West Coast Conference crown. The Bulldogs are one of 10 institutions in the Preseason WNIT field that earned an NCAA Tournament berth last season. The Zags return 12 letterwinners, including four starters, from their 27-6 squad last year. Included in the group is Haiden Palmer, who was named the WCC Tournament Most Valuable Player and ended the season 14th in the nation in steals per game, averaging 3.18 per contest.
The Vandals also made it to the 2012-13 NCAA Tournament - their first since 1985 – after winning the Western Athletic Conference Tournament title. Idaho returns 10 letterwinners from last year, including all five starters. Highlighting the Vandal returnees are Alyssa Charleston and Stacey Barr. Charleston averaged a team-best 13.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game in 2012-13, while Barr, the WAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, chipped in 10.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
