SPOKANE, Wash. -- Wilson Elementary on the South Hill is getting more details about how the Seahawks plan to recognize their school spirit, as well as the students' affinity to star quarterback Russell Wilson.  In the process, the Seahawks organization is helping the school raise money for a local school for special needs children.

KREM 2 News has been helping the school’s campaign to bring the Super Bowl-winning Wilson to the school.  Students have asked for Russell Wilson and may at least get an internet Skype talkback with him.

In the meantime, the organization reportedly plans to send team mascot Blitz for Wilson Elementary’s kickoff assembly for its Spokane Guild School Fundraising event.  Wilson Elementary holds an annual penny drive for the school, which serves students who have developmental delay or disabilities. This year, the Seahawks want to be part of it.

Wilson Principal Tony Ressa called the Guild School to talk to administrators about the Seahawks’ partnership with the school in this year’s fundraiser.

“I told the Guild School, you better get the forklift. We are gonna get you some pennies this year,” said Ressa.

Prizes for the winning classrooms and different fundraising games were also planned as part of this year’s event.

“So they thought, 'we could take each classroom and make it a team and they would get to name themselves and really compete and have fun with supporting a very worthy cause,'” Ressa added.

Guild School Executive Director Dick Boysen said local penny drive fundraisers have contributed nearly $3 million to the school’s budget over the years.
“It's a beautiful thing. There's no two ways about it,” said Boysen.
