MOSCOW - The Vandals now know who will start at quarterback when Idaho opens the 2012 season August 30th against Eastern Washington in the Kibbie Dome.
On Monday Robb Akey announced that junior Dominique Blackman will start the upcoming season under center.
“I’ve been telling everybody we needed separation to come about at the quarterback position," Akey said. "We feel that separation has created itself throughout this camp. Taking into account the practices as well as the scrimmages, the preparation, we have make Dominique our starting quarterback. He’s very excited about that."
"It’s a blessing," Blackman said. "It’s something I’ve been working for my whole life. To me, it’s just a blessing to have this opportunity. I have to take advantage of it."
The news broke this afternoon when Blackman tweeted: "Called my mom to tell her I was named the starter she broke down crying its been long road nowhere near over #2012ForKenMcRoyal #GoVandals"
The 6-foot-5-inch 254 lb QB will get his first game experience for Idaho after the transfer from Old Dominion sat out the 2011seaon. He has shined in the Vandals two scrimmages, going 25-35 for 348 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions.
"I knew it was going to be a competition," Blackman said. "I knew from the day I set foot on campus."
Akey also addressed how the news will impact their routine during the remainder of fall camp.
“We’ll progress through camp with him working with the one offense," Akey said. "We’ll keep working Taylor Davis and Logan Bushnell with that No. 2 offense to determine our number two and three quarterbacks.”
