SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth will open the 2013 NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament at home against the University of Redlands.
The bracket was released this morning and the Pirates were selected as a host institution for the opening round. The game will be Saturday, March 2nd and 7:00 pm in the Fieldhouse. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, youth and senior adults. Gates will open at 5:30 pm.
Whitworth earned its seventh straight trip to the NCAA Division III tournament, and eighth overall, with a 93-72 win over Whitman in the Northwest Conference tournament championship game last Saturday in front of 1,760 fans in the Fieldhouse. The Pirates improved to 24-3 while winning their 12th straight NWC tournament game.
Redlands is making its second NCAA tournament appearance in the last three years. The Bulldogs defeated visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 73-64 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference tournament championship game on Saturday night, improving to 22-5 this season.
Whitworth and Redlands met earlier this season at Chapman University in Orange, California. The Pirates defeated the Bulldogs 70-57 on December 19th.
Whitworth will be hosting an NCAA tournament game for the fifth team. Each of the previous four times (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) have come against SCIAC opponents.
The winner of Saturday’s game will take on the winner of a first-round game between Emory (Ga.) and Randolph (Va.) on March 9th.
