Colton McCargar scored 13 of his team-high 21 points in the second half to help rally 16th-ranked Whitworth to a 70-61 win over Carleton (Minn.) on Saturday afternoon at the Colorado College Thanksgiving Classic.

The Pirates (3-1) were held to 26% shooting in the opening half while falling behind by as many as seven points and 33-28 at halftime.  But Whitworth made 63% in the second half to outscore the Knights 42-28.

Tianen Chen came off of the bench for a game-high 26 points to lead Carleton (0-3).  He had 14 in the first half and made 11-17 from the field.

Whitworth trailed 14-7 early in the first half, but the Pirates appeared to right the ship with an 11-2 run, taking an 18-16 lead on a layup by George Valle.  Valle led the Bucs with nine points in the opening period.  Carleton responded to go back up 31-26 on a three-pointer by Mitchell Biewen.  While holding Whitworth to 26% in the opening half the Knights shot 46% from the field and outrebounded the Pirates 26-17 before haftime.

Then McCargar warmed up.  His jumper gave Whitworth a 41-40 lead with 15:24 left.  But Carleton had one last run of its own, outscoring the Pirates 9-1 over the next four minutes to match their largest lead at 48-41 on a jumper by Shane McSparron .

Dustin McConnell's three-pointer put Whitworth ahead 55-54.  Chen answered with a pair of free throws to give the Knight's their final lead of the game with 6:46 left.  McCargar hit a short jumper and a three-pointer to give Whitworth a 60-56 lead with 4:48 to go.  Carleton got back within 60-59 before Whitworth closed the game with a 10-2 run over the final four minutes.  Taylor Farnsworth had six of those points.

"I was really proud of the way we battled in the second half and trusted each other offensively," said Pirate head coach Matt Logie. "We executed much better and moved the basketball crisply, which resulted in an efficient offensive half."

Valle finished with 13 points, Farnsworth had 11 and McConnell scored ten to give Whitworth four players in double figures.  Farnsworth also grabbed 11 boards for his first double-double of the season.  Whitworth outrebounded Carleton 16-11 in the second half.

Chen added nine rebounds to his game-high point total.  Taylor Hanson contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Knights.

Whitworth will take on host Colorado College on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm (MST).  The Tigers rallied to defeat Carleton in overtime in the classic's first game on Friday night.
