LEWISTON -- The Lewiston Tribune is reporting that Idaho football coach Robb Akey has agreed in principal to a contract extension with the university.

According to the report, the two sides finally agreed on the terms this week after extended negotiations. The contract must now be approved by the Idaho State Board of Education.

“We needed to come to an agreement on what the contract was going to be, to get it extended so we can keep taking this thing forward,” Akey told the Tribune.

KREM 2 Sports Director Tim Lewis spoke with the University of Idaho on Friday, but they said they couldn't comment on the situation until it is approved by the board. The school told Tim that the contract will get in front of the board in April.

The Vandals capped a magical season with a thrilling 43-42 win in the Humanitarian Bowl. Idaho finished the season 8-5, their first winning season in more than a decade.

Reports of contract negotiations started to appear during the season, so it took several months for them to come to an agreement.

“It’s just a matter of making sure that it got done the right way," Akey said in his interview with the Tribune. "That took a little more time, but at least it’s getting done the right way. And that’s what matters the most.”

Akey is entering his fourth season in charge of the Idaho football program.
