Following in the footprints of a pair of former winners from Eastern Washington University, Eagle senior linebacker Ronnie Hamlin has been selected as one of 20 players on the initial watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award given to the top player in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. The long-time leader in FCS coverage and awards – The Sports Network – made the announcement Thursday.

A 22-game starter for the Eagles, Hamlin has 221 tackles already in his 25-game EWU career to rank 22nd in school history. Despite being listed as a senior, Hamlin will eventually apply to the NCAA to receive his sixth year in hopes of replacing a pair of seasons wiped out because of knee injuries -- 2009 as well as Eastern’s national championship season in 2010.

In 2012, Hamlin earned All-America honors from Phil Steele Publications (fourth team) and was a first team All-Big Sky Conference selection. He was also named to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team after starting all 14 games for the Eagles. In addition, he was chosen as the team’s Defensive Player of the Year. He had 136 tackles in 2012 to rank fifth in school history, and his average of 9.71 per game ranked 31st in FCS and fourth in the Big Sky.

Hamlin is from Lacey, Wash., and graduated in 2009 from Timberline High School.
Recently, Hamlin was also selected to the watch list for the College Football Performance Linebacker Award presented annually in FCS. In addition, he was a first team preseason All-America selection by Beyond Sports Network.
