SPOKANE -- Whitworth has a first round bye and will host a second round game of the 2011 NCAA Division III tournament in the Whitworth Fieldhouse on Saturday, March 5th.

The second-ranked Pirates will host the winner of Thursday's first round contest between Redlands and Chapman.

"I am very proud that our team's play on the court has earned them the bye and home court game" said Whitworth head coach Jim Hayford. "I hope every Pirate fan comes and supports them Saturday night. Let's show the NCAA what a great championship hosting atmosphere Spokane is for students from anywhere in the country."

Whitworth is making its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament and sixth overall. The Pirates have been granted a first or second round home game for four seasons in a row.

Whitworth is 26-1 overall and defeated Whitman 74-50 to win the Northwest Conference tournament last Saturday in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Whitworth defeated Chapman 77-56 last season in an NCAA tournament second round game at the Fieldhouse.

Chapman (24-3) got in as the only Pool B (independent) bid to the tournament. The Panthers are ranked 15th in the latest D3hoops.com poll and are making their second straight NCAA Division III tournament appearance.

Redlands (16-11) tied with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for the regular season title of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference, then defeated the Stags in the SCIAC tournament championship game on Saturday night. The Bulldogs are making their first NCAA Division III tournament appearance since 1985.

Saturday's game will tip off at 7:00pm.
