Whitworth women open NCAA Tournament in Atlanta

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth will open the 2013 NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament in Atlanta against Emory University.
The bracket was released this morning and the Pirates will travel to Atlanta for the first round. The game will be Friday, March 1st on Emory’s campus, with the starting time to be determined.
Whitworth earned its second trip to the NCAA Division III tournament, with a 76-61 win over Lewis & Clark College in the Northwest Conference tournament championship game on Saturday. The Bucs improved to 21-6 overall on the season and won their second NWC tournament title under head coach Helen Higgs. The Pirates earned a trip to the 1999-2000 tournament when they fell to Pacific Lutheran in the first round.
Emory is making its first NCAA postseason appearance since 1997, after clinching the University Athletic Association championship title. The Eagles improved to a 22-3 overall record, with a 12-2 record in the conference. Emory was ranked 16th in the latest Division III polls.
Friday’s game will be the first matchup between the Pirates and the Eagles.
The winner of Friday’s game will face the winner of Friday’s game between Ferrum and Huntingdon on Saturday, March 2nd.
