Former USC guard Byron Wesley will transfer to Gonzaga for his senior season. His father, Byron Wesley Sr., confirmed the news to KREM 2's Darnay Tripp.
Wesley delivered the news to Gonzaga's coaches Sunday morning. Wesley Sr. says their visit to Gonzaga was "phenomenal", adding that the coaches made it clear that GU wanted the 6-foot-5-inch guard. His dad describes it as a "perfect fit" for the Zags.
"Even if he isn't scoring there's a lot of things he can do to keep him on the court," Wesley Sr. said. "Not a lot of players play the way he plays."
Wesley averaged 17.8 points and 6. 4 rebounds for the Trojans as a junior in 2013-2014. He had a season-high 31 points on two occasions, first against Northern Arizona and again at Washington St. on March 6th.
His father considers Kevin Pangos and Gary Bell Jr. one of the best shooting combos in the country. That - along with less responsibility to carry the scoring load - should give his son a chance to put a broader skillset on display.
"He's shown a lot of different aspects of his game," Wesley Sr. added. "Defense and passing are some things he'll be able to show this year.
Wesley will be able to play his senior season immediately for the Zags, after finishing up classes at USC this summer.
Oklahoma State and Pittsburgh were reportedly in the running to land the Rancho Cucamonga, CA native. Wesley recently visited GU and Oklahoma State, but decided to pass on a visit to Pitt. That decision came following his trip to Spokane. While on campus he saw Kyle Wiltjer and Adam Morrison walk in Gonzaga's graduation ceremony. Seeing that made him want to do the same at USC. Since the event interfered with his trip to Pittsburgh, Wesley planned to reschedule. That's until he ultimately made his mind up.
Wesley Sr. says his son will likely arrive on campus in August.
Mark Few's program recently lost a member of its backcourt, when Gerard Coleman decided to transfer. He played just 11.9 minutes per game for the Zags.
ESPN's Jeff Goodman was the first to report the news of Wesley's decision.
