SPOKANE, Wash.--Gonzaga Prep students celebrated a big victory for their women’s basketball team during a pep rally Monday. The women’s basketball team won their first state championship title in the school’s history on Saturday.

The 53-51 victory over Mt. Rainier brought all the students to their feet. The coach said how the team won is inspirational.

It was a long awaited celebration as students sang and cheered for their number one team.

The Bullpups beat the Mt. Rainier Rams in the 4-A state championship game at the Tacoma Dome on Saturday. The Bullpups were down by 12 points going into the second half.

“We were just nervous. And like the dome championship game-- none of us had been there,” said point guard Hannah Caudill.

After a pump up talk in the locker room, the team made a big come back.

“We stepped up our defense and that made all the difference,” said point guard Laura Stockton.

Head Coach Mike Arte said he has waited for 26 years for the championship.

"It's exhilarating and the pride you have in the girls,” said Arte.

The team holds the most wins in school history. Out of 25 games, the team only lost one.
