CHENEY -- This is exactly how a regional rivalry should be played out; with a winner decided in overtime.
That's exactly what happened on Thursday night between the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team and the University of Idaho. The Eagles escaped with a 54-51 win in OT.
It was a sloppy first half, with EWU leading only 17-15. There was much more scoring after the break, especially by the Vandals. Idaho led by as many as 12 points with a little more than six minutes to play, but Eastern wouldn't give up. The Eagles eventually tied the game at 46 to force a bonus frame.
Eastern's Julie Piper scored four of the Eagles eight overtime points to lift EWU to its second win this season (2-1). The Vandals are still in search of their first victory (0-2).
Tatjana Sparavalo paced the Eagles with 14 points, while Idaho was led by Bianca Cheever's 15 points and 11 rebounds.
