30 second game guide
Bring’em Out: San Diego 9-17 (2-8 WCC) vs. No. 16/13 (AP/Coaches polls) Gonzaga 20-4 (8-1 WCC) at the McCarthey Athletic Center at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
Watch for: The Zags to tear up the Toreros Saturday night. I don’t think GU will make a liar out of me, especially the way the Bulldogs have played the last three games (vs. Portland, Memphis and St. Mary’s). San Diego was the only team Gonzaga played a full 40 minutes against in the first half of conference play in a 68-50 win at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Look for 40 more good minutes in the Kennel.
Fear: Nothing if you’re the Zags, except a letdown. The Toreros are dead last in the WCC (2-8) and have no real single threat to Gonzaga. USD head coach Billy Grier knows the Bulldogs' offensive and defensive schemes (from his days as a GU assistant), but lacks the talent to do anything about it. The only way this game will be tight, is if the Zags leave their focus in the locker room…or play with three guys on the court.
Respect: Gonzaga’s mental state. Aside from the Maui Invitational, this is the best the Bulldogs have played (consistently all year). Coincidentally, the play/effort/intensity really picked up following the San Francisco loss. I’m sure even Mark Few would tell you, if you’re going to lose, you might as well learn from it and get better. That’s exactly what the Zags did.
Random Stuff: Gonzaga has a 24-game winning streak over San Diego in regular season play. The Bulldogs are 18-point favorites in Saturday’s game.
