SPOKANE, Wash. -- The City of Spokane sent out a tweet Thursday for people to show their Gonzaga spirit by showing up at noon in Riverfront Park for a group photo Friday. Minutes before the photo shoot there was barely anyone there.

One family got to the park and did some recruiting to help complete the picture.

Sarita Marie has been a Gonzaga basketball fan since receiving a free ticket to watch a game in the Kennel 13 years ago. Marie’s family stood with a few city employees ready for the photo shoot.

“We just figured of we have to my family and a couple people that are here from the school, we will just spell out Zags by lying down with our bodies,” said Marie.

Marie and her children started recruiting.

“There are a couple of really persistent people that grabbed us by the coattails and said ‘we need you.’ We said we are here to answer,” said Ron Williamson, who was recruited off the street.

City Employees including the mayor joined in the last minute recruiting efforts. They finally got enough people to spell out ‘Go Zags.’ A photographer took their picture from the top of an aerial lift.

City leaders sent out the photo Friday afternoon on Twitter.
