SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University baseball wrapped up its last home West Coast Conference series of the season Sunday with a 9-6 defeat to BYU at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. The Zags won the three-game series Saturday, after taking games one and two.

The Bulldogs move to 28-14-1 overall and still hold the top position in the West Coast Conference standings at 15-6. BYU improves 21-17, 8-7 in league.

After shutting down the Cougars in the first two innings, BYU pushed five runs across in the third with the damage coming off the bat of Brock Whitney. The BYU first basemen connected off GU starter Arturo Reyes (5-2) for a three run home run to left field.

The Zags got on the board in the bottom half of the frame off BYU starter Adam Miller. Billy Moon singled to open the Bulldogs at-bats and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Moon advanced to third on a Travis Forbes ground out and scored on a Mitchell Gunsolus sacrifice fly to right.

BYU chased Reyes in the fifth. Jaycob Brugman had a strange two-run home run that hit left fielder Moon’s glove before popping over the fence. By adding three more runs, BYU held an 8-1 edge over GU.

Gonzaga cut into the lead in the sixth. Marco Gonzales drove in a run with a single up the middle followed by a Brock Slavin sacrifice fly to left. Moon had a base-hit up the middle bringing in two more runs making the score 8-5.

The game got dramatic in the ninth. Brugman struck again in the top half of inning with his second home run of the game. However GU nearly tied the game in the bottom half.

Wood singled in the only Zag run of the inning but GU had its chance. The Bulldogs loaded the bases and had cleanup hitter Gonzales at the plate. BYU pulled Miller and brought in their closer Matt Milke.

Gonzales battled and fouled two balls off before Milke delivered a fastball to the outside of the plate for a called strike three.

Derek Callahan (1.1 innings) and Kenny Smith (3.0) pitched in relief for the Zags. Each gave up a pair of hits and Smith was charged for one run.

The game concludes Gonzaga’s five games in five days home stand. The Bulldogs went 2-3 in the games including two losses to University of Washington to start the week.

Next for the Bulldogs is its last WCC series of the season. GU will head to Santa Clara University for a three-game set starting Friday.
