SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Gonzaga University senior pitcher Tyler Olson has been named the Rawlings West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Month for April, the league announced Tuesday.
Olson had a spectacular month for the Bulldogs. The Spokane, Wash., native won each of his starts and compiled a 4-0 record with a 0.52 ERA. Of those four starts, three were complete games and one was a complete game shutout. In 34.1 innings the lefty allowed just 21 hits, four runs, two earned runs while striking out 28 and walking eight.
Highlighting Olson’s month was a 19-inning scoreless streak spanning his start April 6 at Portland to the third inning against BYU April 26. During the streak was his complete game effort over Pepperdine University where the southpaw gave up four hits and struck out six waves on the road.
Olson also opened the month with his second career save in a Bulldogs uniform. He recorded the save at Washington State University April 2 by getting the last out of the game.
On the year Olson is a WCC-best 9-2 with a 2.17 ERA. He has five complete games to his name with the one shutout. This is the second time Olson has been recognized by the conference this season; he was named Rawlings WCC Pitcher of the Week March 11.
Last weekend Gonzaga (31-14-1, 18-6 WCC) claimed the WCC regular-season title and wrapped up league play with a sweep over Santa Clara University. GU hosts its last home series of the weekend starting Saturday with Appalachian State University visiting for a doubleheader. The Zags wrap up the 2013 home slate 3 p.m. Sunday at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.
