SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners have acquired 2008 Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee from the Philadelphia Phillies in a trade.
The deal sends minor league pitchers Philippe Aumont and J.C. Ramirez, and outfielder Tyson Gillies to the Phillies.
"We are very excited to have Cliff Lee on-board in the Seattle organization," said Mariners General Manager Zduriencik said in a press release. "It goes without saying what a quality pitcher and competitor he is and what he will mean to our ballclub and organization."
Lee, 31, split time in 2009 between the Cleveland Indians and Phillies. He went 14-13 with a 3.22 ERA in 34 starts (7-9, 3.14 in Cleveland; 7-4, 3.39 in Philadelphia).
He helped the Phillies to their second consecutive trip to the World Series. Lee went 4-0 in the postseason with two complete games and a 1.56 ERA.
In Game One of the World Series, Lee struck out 10 and did not allow an earned run in a complete-game victory over the Yankees. He became only the second pitcher in World Series history, and the first in 106 years, to throw a complete-game victory in which he had double-digit strikeouts and did not allow a walk.
With Cleveland, Lee won the 2008 American League Cy Young Award going 22-3 with a 2.54 ERA. He led the AL in wins and ERA that year.
Toronto and Oakland were reportedly also expected to be involved in the trade, with pitcher Roy Halladay going to the Phillies. Those details were not immediately available.
