SPOKANE -- Gonzaga had five players record multi-hit games in an eight-inning 19-10 non-conference loss to No. 18 University of Oregon on Wednesday afternoon. The game was called prior to the start of the ninth inning due to Oregon’s travel arrangements.
Gonzaga (13-24-1) put up 10 runs on 13 hits but the Ducks (25-12) put up multiple runs in six consecutive innings to post the win. The Zags had Drew Heid, Steven Halcomb, Andy Hunter, Chris Sturdivant and Ernesto Ortiz each finish with two hits.
The Bulldogs answered a three-run Oregon second inning with a run on a RBI-double by Ortiz and then matched the Ducks three runs third with three runs off their own in the bottom of the fram, highlighted by back-to-back RBI-doubles by Mark Castellitto and Hunter to make hit 6-4 Oregon through three.
The Oregon offense didn’t cool down and continued to get swings off the Bulldogs bullpen that saw Ryan Leahy and Max Manix each make their collegiate debuts on the day. The Ducks put up two runs in the fourth, five in the fifth, and three in the sixth before capping their scoring with three more runs in the seventh.
Ortiz added another RBI-double and Heid registered a two-run double in the Zags three-run sixth. Gonzaga picked up two runs in the seventh and one more on a Hunter sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it 19-10.
Heid, Hunter and Ortiz each finished with two RBI.
Gonzaga heads to San Diego this weekend for a three-game West Coast Conference series against the University of San Diego. Friday’s series opener is scheduled for a 3pm start with 1pm starts slated for Saturday and Sunday.
