SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University baseball has added Levi Pereira to 2013-2014 roster announced head coach Mark Machtolf Monday. The Coeur D’ Alene, Idaho, native will join the Zags next school year and will play first base, catcher and outfield.
Pereira, the 2012 North Idaho Baseball Player of the Year, will bring the power for the Bulldogs. He led the state of Idaho in home runs (9) and RBI (47) as a junior and was named All-State. Pereira hit .542 for Coeur D’ Alene high school on a team that finished 24-3 before falling in the Class 5A quarterfinals. An All-League first teamer, Pereira was successful as a student with an Academic Achievement Award to his name.
Why Pereira chose Gonzaga: “I chose Gonzaga University because it gives me the opportunity to play for one of the best programs in the west, while also receiving a top-of-the-line education. From the moment I stepped on the GU campus and met the coaching staff, I knew I wanted to be a part of the Zag family.”
Machtolf on Pereira: “We are very fortunate to have a player of Levi’s caliber joining our program next year. He is one of the best power hitters in the Northwest and will be adding much needed power to the 2014 lineup. We will use Levi in a few different positions defensively, mainly at first base and corner outfield, but he could also see time behind the plate as well. Levi brings a great work ethic on the field and in the classroom making him a perfect fit for the Gonzaga baseball program.”
