SPOKANE -- Former Spokane Indians pitcher and current Kansas City Royals ace Zack Greinke was named the American League Cy Young award winner on Tuesday after going 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA and 242 strikeouts for the Royals this season.
The right-hander was drafted by the Royals in the first-round of the 2002 MLB First-Year Player Draft, going sixth overall. Following a brief stint with the GCL Royals (Rookie), the young pitcher was promoted to Short Season Single-A Spokane, where he started two games before being promoted again to Wilmington (High-A).
Greinke won the award with 25-of-28 first-place votes and 134 points, beating the nearest runner-up Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners.
