SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners announced on Thursday afternoon that they signed right-handed pitcher Félix Hernández to a five-year contract extension.
"This is a great day for the Mariners, the city of Seattle and for Félix and his family," said Zduriencik. "Félix has turned into a true staff ace and we are thrilled we will be seeing him in a Mariners uniform for at least the next five years."
Hernández, 23, finished 2nd in the American League Cy Young voting after going 19-5 with a 2.49 ERA (66 ER, 238.2 IP) last season. He led the AL in winning percentage (.792), tied for the lead in wins, ranked 2nd in ERA, 3rd in innings pitched and 4th in strikeouts (217).
The native of Valencia, Venezuela set a club record for wins in a season by a right-handed pitcher and joined Randy Johnson as the only other player in club history to record a season of at least 19 wins, 200.0 innings, 200 strikeouts and a sub 2.50 ERA.
Over the last three seasons, Hernández has combined to go 42-23 with a 3.23 ERA in 95 starts. In his five-year Major League career, Hernández is 58-41 with a 3.45 ERA.
