SPOKANE -- The Whitworth baseball team is going somewhere it never has before. After winning the McMinnville Regional, the Pirates are heading to this week's DIII World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin.
There are only six DIII teams still alive for the national championship. Whitworth is one, while Marietta is another. These are two teams with very different histories.
Marietta, located in Ohio, is the No. 1 team in the country, defending national champs, making their 21st ever trip to the DIII World Series.
This is Whitworth's first ever trip to the DIII Tournament. The only national championship they ever won was in 1960 when they were a member of the NAIA.
Whitworth (30-14-1) and Marietta (42-7) clash on Friday at 5:45pm. It's a double elimination tournament, so the Pirates are guaranteed at least two games. The national championship game is scheduled for May 29th.
