PULLMAN – Mark Appel tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out 10 as No. 23 Stanford defeated Washington State 3-0 in Pac-12 Conference baseball, Thursday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Appel (4-2) outdueled Joe Pistorese (3-2), who went the distance for the Cougars (15-9, 2-2 Pac-12). Pistorese struck out four and walked two while giving up nine hits and two earned runs.
“The guy we faced tonight is a big league pitcher,” Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. “Unfortunately for us, he came back to college and we had to face him.”
Stanford (12-8, 2-2 Pac-12) scored all of its runs in the second inning. Brian Ragira singled in two runs and back-to-back errors by the Cougars allowed the third run to score.
Washington State put the leadoff man aboard in three innings, but could not break through against Appel, who walked one and hit three batters. The Cougars were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and Appel set down the last-nine men he faced.
The series continues, Friday at 6 p.m.
