SPOKANE - The first punches have been thrown in Spokane.
Monday marked the beginning of the 2013 USA Boxing National Championships, with preliminary bouts at the HUB Sports Center. Fighting is scheduled to continue Tuesday through Thursday at the HUB from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The action shifts to Northern Quest beginning with Friday's semifinals and championships.
The week began with 477 registered fighters in a variety of classifications and divisions, the largest begin the men's elite which boasts 184 fighters. Meanwhile, Seattle native Queen Underwood headlines a women's elite group that includes three Olympians. For many it is the first major step towards a spot in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
The tournament's arrival in Spokane marks the first time it has been held outside of Colorado since 2002.
