Behind the bat and defensive ability of left fielder Eduard Pinto, the Spokane Indians opened up 2014 with a 12-hit, 7-3 victory over the visiting Eugene Emeralds in front of a sellout crowd of 6,882 fans on Friday night for Opening Night.
Pinto, returning to Spokane after a brief stay towards the end of 2013, sparked the Indians with a bases-clearing double to push the Indians out to an early 3-0 lead. He scored Marcus Greene, Seth Spivey and Saquan Johnson. Pinto would also make a jumping catch against the fence in left field to prevent Eugene's Edwin Moreno from extra bases in the third. Spokane's left fielder finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBIs.
Nick Gardewine (1-0) earned his first victory in Spokane in his first try at Avista Stadium. The seventh-round draft pick went five strong innings, but gave up one two-run home run in the fifth to Marcus Davis. Andrew Barnett, Luis Pollorena and John Fasola allowed just two hits in four innings in a combined effort out of the bullpen.
Spivey and Jamie Jarmon both had two hits each, with Jarmon collecting one RBI. Greene, Juremi Profar and Jose Trevino each added an RBI in their 2014 debut.
