AIRWAY HEIGHTS - Hundreds of fighters brought lofty expectations and National Championship hopes to Spokane this week. Now a select few are just a few jabs away away from making those dreams a reality.

On Friday the USA Boxing National Championships took the 'sweet science' to Northern Quest for semifinal and championship bouts.

Only one fighter from Washington entered the ring on the fifth day of competition. It was Nicholas Jefferson out of Tacoma. The 20-year old 141 pounder started fighting when he was eight years old. Jefferson is no stranger to national competition, and has been to multiple USA Championships before.

After two wins this week he faced southpaw Jayquran Hazel Friday afternoon. Nick said he felt like he had the edge from the beginning, and sure enough he took the first two rounds en route to a split decision.

Jefferson had never gotten out of the 1st round before, now he'll fight for the championship in his home state.

The title bouts begin at Northern Quest Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
