The Spokane Indians took game one of the five-game series with the Volcanoes, squeaking out a 4-3 win in front of 1,809 at Volcanoes Stadium.

Brandon Bednar scored in the first on a Jeremy Sy grounder to the right side of the infield. Bednar reached on an infield single and a throwing error by pitcher David Ledbetter (2-0) which advanced Bednar to third.

The Indians then took control of the game putting two runs on the board in both the second and third innings. Barrett Serrato and Alberto Triunfel led off the second with back-to-back hits and both scored later on the bats of Cam Schiller and Marcus Greene.

In the third both runs came in on Volcanoes mistakes. Kevin Torres would score on an error by catcher Gabriel Cornier and Ryan Cordell would come in on a wild pitch by Chris Johnson (2-2). The Indians would not score another run in the game.

After the third, Johnson would not surrender another hit. He finished the night pitching five innings, giving up four runs on five hits and striking out 11 for a career high in strikeouts, which is also a season high for any pitcher in the NWL in 2013. The mark was one off of a Volcanoes franchise record of 12 strikeouts that has happened twice before.

On the game, the Volcanoes pitching staff struck out 15 and walked only three.

The Volcanoes got two back in the fifth when Bednar doubled to lead off the inning and scored in the next at-bat when Sam Eberle hit a two-run homerun to right. Eberle was 1-for-3 on the night.

The home team then put runners on first and second in the sixth with no outs, but were unable to capitalize as reliever Ryne Slack struck out Tyler Horan and forced Ryan Tuntland into a double play to end the inning.

The Volcanoes now fall to 16-9 and remain in a tight race for first place in the Northwest League South Division with the second-place Boise Hawks.

The Volcanoes and Indians resume play Thursday with game two of their five-game series. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m.
