SPOKANE, Wash. – One day after winning the Old Spice Classic, Gonzaga University got the attention of the national pollsters and forward Elias Harris the attention of the West Coast Conference.
The Bulldogs, who ran their record to 6-0, are ranked 12th in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN polls, while Harris was tabbed the WCC Player of the Week.
Harris, a 6-8, 240-pound senior from Speyer, Germany, scored a season-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Davidson College in leading the Bulldogs to their second Old Spice Classic Championship, the other coming in 2008 It was the 23rd double-double of his career.
In the three games he shot 67.7 percent from the field (21-for-31), including 9-of-11 in the title game, 80 percent from the line (12-15) and grabbed 23 rebounds for 7.7 rpg to go with his 18.3 ppg. His 1,425 points rank 17th and his 768 rebounds rank sixth on the all-time Gonzaga charts.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, jumped five spots in the AP rankings and four spots in the USA Today/ESPN voting. It’s the highest the Bulldogs have been ranked since finishing 10th in the final AP poll of 2009. The Bulldogs trail Creighton University in both polls.
The Zags downed Clemson University, the University of Oklahoma and Davidson to win the Old Spice Classic.
Indiana University sits atop both polls while Duke University moved into the No. 2 spot after defeating the University of Louisville in the title game of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament.
The next action for Gonzaga will be Thursday when Lewis-Clark State College of Lewiston, Idaho, visits the McCarthey Athletic Center for a 6 p.m. contest. The University of the Pacific, which will join the WCC next season and downed WCC foe Saint Mary’s College last week, comes to town for a Saturday for a 5 p.m. match-up.
