SPOKANE -- The Gonzaga men's basketball team had a lot to prove at the start of the 2009-10 season. With 12 underclassmen on the roster, no one was sure what the Bulldogs would be able to accomplish.

We're just six games into the season and the Zags have already accomplished a lot. The latest achievement was last week's Maui Invitational championship. GU chalked up wins against Colorado, Wisconsin, and Cincinnati to win the title.

Gonzaga is now 5-1 on the year. That's good enough to launch them into the national polls for the first time this season. The Bulldogs are ranked 16th in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, while they are pegged at No. 17 in the Associated Press Poll. The polls were released Monday morning.

Washington State, coming off a championship in the Great Alaska Shootout, is among "Others Receiving Votes" in both polls, but they have not cracked the Top 25.

The Zags and Cougars go head-to-head on Wednesday night at McCarthey Athletic Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm.

Be sure to tune into KREM 2 News at 5, 6, 10, and 11 that night for all the pregame previews, highlights, and postgame reaction. We'll also have full coverage of the game right here on KREM.com.
