SPOKANE, Wash. – A tough weekend concluded for the Gonzaga University baseball team as the University of San Diego completed the series sweep over the Bulldogs 5-1 at Fowler Park and Cunningham Field Sunday.
The Zags tumble to 10-21 overall and an even 6-6 in West Coast Conference games.
Caleb Wood and Payden Cawley Lamb each went 2-for-4 to represent four of the Gonzaga hits. Jimmy Sinatro had the lone RBI to bring his season total to 17 (a team-high).
Right-handed pitcher Andrew Sopko was the losing pitcher of record. Sopko worked seven innings and was responsible for four earned runs on 10 hits. The sophomore is 2-2 on the year.
Gonzaga scored its only run in the top of the ninth. Wood, Lamb and Sinatro recorded back-to-back-to-back singles to score Wood. GU looked to keep the late rally alive but Sam Brown hit into a game ended double play.
San Diego was first on the board with Ben Wylly’s third home run of the series. With two outs and a runner on first base, Wylly connected on the Sopko offering over the right field wall. A third run was added in the inning on a Louis Lechich single through the right side.
The Toreros gave Sopko another stressful inning in the third. Two Torero base hits set the table for a Kyle Holder sacrifice to score USD’s fourth run.
The final San Diego run came around in the eighth. Karl Myers replaced Sopko to begin the frame and the first batter he faced (Jesse Jenner) homered to left field.
Lucas Long got the win for USD. He held GU scoreless for eight innings and allowed just three hits.
The Bulldogs have several days off before opening its second home conference series of the year. Gonzaga welcomes Santa Clara University to Spokane Friday for a 6 p.m. game.
