SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University baseball and Loyola Marymount University will play for the series Sunday as the Lions prevailed 2-0 in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader at Patterson Baseball Complex.
By splitting the two games, GU moves to 10-15 overall and 6-2 in the West Coast Conference. LMU slides to 16-11, 6-2 in league.
Gonzaga freshman starter Brandon Bailey put forth a tremendous effort in his first starting nod in Spokane. The right-handed pitcher went the distance and gave up two runs on nine hits while striking out five. Unfortunately his performance went unrewarded and he picked up his fourth loss of the season.
LMU’s Patrick McGrath got the win for the Lions. He allowed five hits in 6.1 scoreless innings.
Loyola Marymount scored in the fourth and sixth innings. Their first run came on a Jimmy Jack fly out in foul territory to left field which brought home David Edwards (who was on third base). The other scored on a Cole Trezek RBI to left field.
GU did have a few opportunities to get on the board.
In the bottom half of the fourth, Gonzaga had runners on first and second base. However McGrath got Cory LeBrun to hit into an inning ending double play. Two innings late Cabe Reiten faced the same situation but he too hit into an inning ending double play.
The Bulldogs had five hits in total and Sam Brown was responsible for two of them. The remaining hits came from Mitchell Gunsolus (double), Taylor Jones (double) and Jimmy Sinatro (single).
The series finale between the top two teams in the WCC standings is set for Sunday at noon.
