The Tri City Americans outscored Spokane 2-1 in a six round shootout and came away with a 2-1 win over the Chiefs Saturday night in Kennewick. It was Spokane's second straight shootout loss this season as the Chiefs record is now 17-9-0-2 on the year.
Riley Whittingham scored 7:41 into the game to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead in the first period. Whittingham's 5th goal of the year was assisted by Markson Bechtold and Blair Oneschuk. Tri City would tie the game with just 40 seconds left in the first on a Jessey Astles power play goal as the game was 1-1 after one. Neither team would score in the second and third periods as Spokane outshot Tri City 26-22 through regulation.
Neither team scored in the overtime as Spokane had to kill off a Tri City power play over the first 1:49 of the OT. Mitch Holmberg scored in the first round of the shootout to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead after round one. Connor Rankin scored for Tri in round two to even the shootout 1-1 after two rounds. Spokane, who shot second in the shootout, had a chance to win the game in rounds 3 through 5, but couldn't score on Tri goalie Eric Comrie. Tri's Phillip Tot scored in round 6 to give the Ams a 2-1 lead, and Connor Chartier was denied in the 6th round to give Tri the 2-1 win.
