SPOKANE - The Spokane Chiefs selected today 18-year-old defenseman Tamás Láday of Hungary with the 42nd overall pick in the 2014 CHL Import Draft. Láday, standing at 6'7" and weighing 212 pounds, adds considerable size and strength to the Chiefs' roster.
"Tamás's size allows us to get bigger as a team, an area which we felt we needed to improve on," said Chiefs Director of Player Personnel Chris Moulton. "He is not afraid to engage physically."
During the 2013-14 season, Láday played a combined 63 games between four clubs at both the U18 and U20 levels. With Székesfehérvár of the Austrian U20 league, he scored 7 goals and 13 assists in 34 games. With Ifj Ocskay Gábor JA of the Hungarian U20 league, he tallied 6 assists in 15 games.
"He has a good skill set for a player with a very large frame," Moulton continued. "He moves well for a big man, so he does a great job of transitioning the puck. He looks to have a lot of upside and will make our team better in the future."
In the 2014 IIHF U20 World Championship Division II Group A, Láday led the Hungarian team in scoring by a defenseman with 2 goals and 5 assists in 5 games, adding a +7 rating.
Láday will join Austrian import forward Dominic Zwerger as Spokane's two non-North American players.
