Who should Seahawks fans vote for?
Seattle Seahawks fans who enjoy the popular Madden video games – and know of the dreaded “Madden Curse” – have a tough choice to make over the next week.
Do they vote for Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman or Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback of the rival San Francisco 49ers?
The pair is squaring off in the semifinals of the Madden NFL 15 cover vote, which started Friday and lasts through June 30.
The history of the Madden Curse is well documented. Fourteen of the 16 players who have graced the cover of the game have either sustained significant injuries or had terrible seasons statistically.
Take 2006, for example. Former Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander was coming off an MVP and Super Bowl season. He had rushed for a league-high 1,880 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also signed a huge multi-year contract after that.
He made the cover of Madden that following season – and his play on the field tanked. Alexander played two more injury-plagued years in Seattle, never returning to MVP form. He ended up in Washington after that where he played in four games before his retirement.
Look up and down the list of players who have made the Madden cover and you'll see similar stories.
Sherman is coming off a league-best 8 interception season and a Super Bowl championship. Just like Alexander, he has also signed a big, multi-year contract extension.
But it remains to be seen: Will loyal 12s look past the curse and vote Sherman in, or will they try to “protect” the brash, outspoken All-Pro and vote for Kaep?
Sherman doesn't appear to be concerned. He's asking fans to put him on the cover.
