SEATTLE -- The Mariners signed veteran free agent catcher Henry Blanco on Friday, and designated catcher Kelly Shoppach for assignment. Blanco will be available for Friday night's game in Oakland.
Blanco, 41, is a 16-year veteran who has played with ten teams, most recently with the Blue Jays in 2013. He was released on June 10 after appearing in 15 games with Toronto.
"We had interest in Henry this off season," said Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik. "And recent circumstances developed allowing us to acquire Henry. We are pleased to be able to add him to our 25 man roster and look forward to his contributions."
According to the Mariners, Blanco has a reputation as a strong defensive catcher, throwing out 40% of base runners trying to steal against him in his career.
Blanco is a .226 career hitter with 69 home runs. He hit .184 this season in Toronto.
Shoppach hit .196 in 35 games with the Mariners this season. The Mariners now have 10 days to work out a trade, release or outright Shoppach's contract.
