Store-bought gravies to avoid
11/19/2002
These gravies came out on bottom in our tasting of nine
supermarket gravies. The gravies were tasted with basic homemade turkey
and dressing. Prices are from Albertsons, but most should be widely
available in supermarkets with the exception of Mayacamas. Mixes are
prepared by adding water and cooking briefly. Jars and cans are
heat-and-serve. Serving sizes vary depending on the product, so we've
given you how much each product makes.
Product: Pioneer Brown (dry mix)
Yield: 2 cups Price: $1.19 Comments: Deep, rich
color. Salty, beefy flavor. Would be good with sautéed mushrooms. Passable
with beef, not turkey.
Product: Heinz
Home Style Roasted Turkey (jar) Yield:
12 ounces Price: $1.99 Comments: Light, thin,
bland, "packaged" chemical flavor. Disliked by all tasters. Not
salvageable by additions.
Product: Boston
Market Roasted Turkey Yield:15 ounces
Price: $2.69 Comments: Nice color with floating flecks of
pseudo-giblets. Looks good, tastes bad. Tomato flavor, burnt taste with
chemical aftertaste. Disliked by all.
Product: Williams Country Brown (dry mix)
Yield: 1 cup Price: $1.19 Comments: Thick and
brown. Beefy aroma is overwhelmed by heavy salt and pepper.
Product: Mayacamas Turkey (gluten-free) (dry mix)
Yield: 1 cup Price: $1.19 Comments: Pale, thin, salty,
too much sage, chemical taste. Unanimously disliked. Rated lowest of all
tasted.
