MOSCOW, Idaho -- A group called the American Humanist Association says its billboard in Moscow, Idaho reading "Millions are good without God" has been vandalized again. It appeared the sign was altered to make the "out" in "without" blend into the background, so the sign appeared to read "Millions are good with God".

The group said it received word from the Moscow Police Dept. that the sign was vandalized sometime between 1'00 a.m. and 3'00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

"This is not just vandalism, it is religiously motivated vandalism which attempts to silence a minority viewpoint." David Noise, President of the American Humanist Assoc. said in a statement.

"Everyone, not just humanists, should be concerned about such acts", he said.

It's the second time in two weeks the sign has been vandalized.

The group says Humanism is the idea that you can be good without a belief in God.

SPOKANE -- A 50-year-old woman from Spokane County died after contracting the H1N1 flu virus, the Spokane Regional Health District confirmed Monday Morning.

The district reports the seasonal flu has also arrived in Spokane, with two cases confirmed Monday as well. A health district spokeswoman says those cases come at a typical time of year for seasonal flu, between October and March. The number of cases of seasonal, or type B flu, tend to peak in late January into February.

"We have basic recommendations at this time," said Dr. Joel McCullough, Health Officer for the Spokane Regional Health Dist. "We want people to get a seasonal flu vaccination and the H1N1 vaccine if they are in a prioritized group."

McCullough says people can protect themselves against the spread of both the seasonal and the H1N1 flu viruses by taking precautions like washing their hands frequently, staying at home when sick, and covering their coughs and sneezes.

With confirmation of the first couple of cases of seasonal flu, the Spokane Regional Health Dist. has set up a seasonal flu hotline at (509) 324-1643.

SPOKANE -- Spokane County is temporarily running the Raceway Park near Airway Heights until it can find a new operator

The County fired former operator Austin Motorsports on October 29, and are now trying to explain what they are going to do until they can find a new owner.

Contractors involved in cleaning and fixing the track are owed more than a million dollars. If Austin Motorsports declares bankruptcy, that debt could be erased.

There's also a possibility, depending on how that goes, that the county could be on the hook for paying those contractors. Then it's a question of whether the county's insurance will pay for it.

If not, the county has to come up with the money somehow, and no one has a clue where it might come from.

The county didn't just fire Austin Motorsports, Austin Motorsports reportedly sent an email to the county saying the business was out of money and going under.

The county says it will mothball the track until next season, but keep looking for new operators. If they can't find a new operator by spring, the county will run the track.

SPOKANE -- Halloween is tomorrow and there's a spooky spot in Spokane that some people claim is haunted.

People say they've heard voices at night at Green Wood Cemetery near Spokane Falls Community College, but most say the really creepy place is the staircase leading to the graves.

It's a staircase more than 100-years-old, called the thousand steps. They're cracked, falling apart and overgrown with weeds - and local legend says - haunted.

The legend says people who try to climb the stairs get so scared they can't go on and they hear the voices of the dead warning them off.

Dave Ittner knows there aren't a thousand of them, he doesn't buy the ghost story either. Ittner has worked there for 7-years and says he has yet to see a ghost.

The steps are a hard climb, the stairs are missing in some places, falling down in others. "I don't make much of the rumors it's probably something started in high school 50-years ago and just kinda stuck around," said Ittner.

Still people in Spokane swear there's something scary going on here.

MEAD, Wash. -- A Mead High School student is behind bars after sending the school into a lock-down Wednesday morning.
Investigators say he threatened a teacher saying he was hired to kill her. But he claims he was just joking.
According to police, the 16-year-old junior boy walked into class with his hands extended like he had a gun, then threatened the teacher.
"You could see her crying. She was obviously scared," said a student.
A dozen deputies rushed to the scene and arrested the boy 19 minutes after the threat. They found no gun on him or in his locker.
While they searched for a weapon, the school went into lock-down mode.
"We saw teachers running in the hallways and grabbing kids and putting them into rooms," said Mead High School senior Jeremy Rise.
The boy is facing one count of felony harassment. But suspension won't be decided until after the investigation.
"This kid's probably a prankster and I think he's learned his lesson," said Mead parent Karen Crawford.

The teen is now in the Spokane Juvenile Detention Center and scheduled to appear in court next Wednesday.

ATHOL, Idaho--A gas station in Athol, ID mistakenly sold gas for one cent per gallon for a couple of hours in the middle of the night and now the station's owner wants to prosecute two customers who didn't return to pay the difference.

In a criminal complaint to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department, Deborah Felts, the owner of the Cydco Food and Fuel in Athol, said that on Oct. 24th between 1'45 a.m. and 3'40 a.m. pump number three at her station along Highway 95 sold regular unleaded gas for one cent per gallon. Normally it would have sold for $2.86/gallon on that day.

Felts said the cheap price was not intentional and could possibly be a computer or electronic malfunction.

Felts said four customers came in during that time and filled up. Two of the customers returned later in the day to pay up what they owed, but two others did not. Credit card records showed one of them called a friend to tell him about the cheap price and the friend showed up. Both of those suspects later came back and filled up again.

The station lost a total of $1,076 worth of gas that day.

Felts said she has contacted her credit card administrator to help track down the suspects because the video surveillance at her store stopped working the day before the thefts.

Felts told deputies that she would like to prosecute the two people who haven't returned to pay her back. They would face potential charges of two counts of petty theft.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The U.S. Census Bureau is making an unprecedented effort to include same-sex couples in next year's national population count, but legally married gay couples won't show up as such in the official once-a-decade tally, bureau representatives said Thursday.

Statistical problems related to the development of the 2010 census form and the evolving legal state of same-sex relationships led Census officials to conclude that trying to include married gay couples in the overall snapshot of household marital status could yield an inaccurate number, said Gary Gates, a University of California, Los Angeles demographer who has been advising the bureau on gay issues.

Instead, same-sex married couples will be added into the category for unmarried partners, just as they were for the 2000 census. But in a marked policy departure, the agency plans to make the data on same-sex couples who described themselves as married available on a state-by-state basis.

"The Bureau has decided to give us the information, but be a little cautious," Gates said.

The decision to develop separate sets of numbers was a compromise position that was "less about politics and more about accurate data," he said.

Gates stressed that it was important for gay couples to participate in the census, noting that information drawn from the last one had been used in lawsuits dealing with same-sex marriage and to lobby congressional representatives who may wrongly assume they do not have many gay constituents.

Because same-sex marriages were not legal in any U.S. state a decade ago, the 2010 census is the first for which the bureau has wrestled with how to count married same-sex couples. In June, census officials announced that they would make the attempt, reversing an earlier decision made under the Bush administration.

Since then, however, it's become clearer that a wildly inflated number could be produced if the number of heads of household who said they lived with another adult of the same sex, and described that person as a husband or wife, were only counted.

Some couples in civil unions or domestic partnerships, or who live as spouses in states where gay couples have no spousal rights, have tended in past surveys to identify themselves as husbands or wives anyway, according to Gates.

The annual American Community Survey the bureau produced for 2008, for example, had 150,000 married same-sex couples spread across every U.S. state, even though only two states - Massachusetts and for a 5-month period, California - allowed same-sex marriages. Gates estimates there are probably no more than 35,000 legally married gay couples in the country now.

Undercounting same-sex couples also remains a significant concern, Gates said, since some couples may not be living openly and fear discrimination.

Tim Olsen, assistant chief of the bureau's field division, told gay community leaders at a census outreach meeting in San Francisco Thursday that the agency is continuing to refine the way it counts same-sex couples and could have the ability to separate married from unmarried couples in time for future surveys.

"We have a big opportunity to create a picture of America that includes us. We are not invisible anymore," Olsen said.

This census marks the first time that gays and lesbians have been targeted for minority outreach efforts that also include reaching out to groups deemed "hard to reach" because of their disaffection with the government.

The gay community campaign will include a Web site, scheduled to go up in about two weeks, called Our Families Count, as well as advertising campaigns in cities with large gay populations. Among the video vignettes meant to demonstrate the nation's diversity on the main census site is one featuring a transgender person, Olsen said.

"You will see yourself in these videos, whether you are Hispanic, black, white, mixed-race, gay or straight," he said.

Although the census has not attempted to count individuals who identify as gay, lesbian or transgender, they could be included in the next count or even future editions of the annual American Community Survey, Olsen said. The survey, which is much more detailed than the 10-question census form that will be mailed to every household in March, is designed to give state and local governments a snapshot of how their populations are changing.

Olsen said gay leaders need to keep advocating if they want to be recognized.

"In terms of 2010, we are set in stone. For 2020, now is the time to start doing what you do best," he said.
