KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's president has been trying to rally support today for his plan to end fighting in the eastern part of his country. The new Ukrainian leader spoke by phone with Vice President Joe Biden, and with the leaders of Russia and Germany.

A spokesman says President Petro Poroshenko told Russia's Vladimir Putin that it's "unacceptable" that tanks had crossed the border into eastern Ukraine from Russia. Ukraine's interior minister said three tanks crossed into Ukraine along with other armored vehicles from Russia, and were attacked by military forces fighting against pro-Russia separatists.

There's no independent confirmation that the tanks had come in from Russia.

The Ukrainian president has said he's willing to negotiate, but not with what he calls terrorists.

Russia's foreign minister said earlier today that the separatists are ready for a cease-fire, but that the process has to be initiated by Ukraine.
