CASTRIES, St. Lucia (AP) — Police in St. Lucia say they are trying to identify a body found burned beyond recognition last week in a charred Range Rover near a luxury hotel on the north shore of the tiny Caribbean island.
Authorities released few details Wednesday, but speculation is rife that the dead man is wealthy hotelier Oliver Gorbat. He was reported missing Friday, the same day the body was found near his family's upscale Cap Maison hotel and spa.
Tourism Minister Lorne Theophilus says only that the body is believed to be a "prominent St. Lucian resident associated with the tourism sector."
On Wednesday, Gorbat's family issued a statement saying he died Friday. But Assistant Police Commissioner Frances Henry says officials are still trying to determine the identity of the charred body.
