BERLIN (AP) — Police say the mother of two abandoned babies found on either side of the German-Netherlands border has been identified through DNA testing as a German woman.

Cologne police spokesman Christoph Gilles said Tuesday after receiving numerous tips they identified a 25-year-old woman living near Cologne as the likely mother of the children.

He says she admitted abandoning her newborn boy in the Dutch city of Roermond in June, and her little girl some two years earlier in Huerth near Cologne, and a DNA test has now confirmed she is the mother.

Gilles says the woman says she left the girl in the Netherlands so she couldn't be easily tracked down.

Both children are now in foster care.

Gilles wouldn't give further details about the mother or possible father or fathers.
