TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — A Honduran official says that a police operation to dismantle a drug trafficking cartel wasn't as successful as it should have been because authorities working with the traffickers alerted them ahead of time.

Seized Property Administration Office director Humberto Palacios says officials seized 71 bank accounts from Los Cachiros drug gang during the September operation and that none of them had any funds.

Palacios said Thursday that the houses and businesses seized were completely empty.

Palacios said a tenant who rented one of the properties began looking for another house a month ago after learning authorities planned to act against its owners.

U.S. and Honduran authorities say Los Cachiros drug gang works with Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel and allegedly control 90 percent of the nation's clandestine landing strips.
