NEW DELHI (AP) — The father of a woman who was gang raped on a bus in India says he's "very happy" to see his daughter get "justice."
The father commented after a court in New Delhi today sentenced four men to death by hanging for the attack. The victim was left with massive injuries that caused her death.
Dozens of demonstrators outside the courthouse praised the sentence, while also calling for swift justice in tens of thousands of rape cases that remain backlogged in Indian courts.
The judge who issued the sentence said it was crime that had "shocked the collective conscience" of India. But as the judge left the bench, a defense lawyer shouted at him that the sentence does not represent "the victory of truth," but instead the "defeat of justice." He says the judge issued the sentence under "political pressure."
The 23-year-old victim and a male friend had been coming home from an evening showing of the movie "Life of Pi" when the men lured them into boarding a bus they had been joy-riding through the city. The man was beaten, and the women was held down and repeatedly raped.
India's Supreme Court has ruled that the death penalty should be used only in "the rarest of rare cases." Only two people -- both terrorists -- have been executed in India since 2004.
