VENICE, Italy (AP) — Nicolas Cage says after more than three decades acting in films he has no intention of retiring anytime soon, despite "fantasies of a life of contemplation."

Cage, who is premiering David Gordon Green's "Joe" at the Venice Film Festival, said Friday that he may take off more time between films, "but film performance is a part of me." He called "Joe" ''one of the most memorable" films he has worked on in his career.

The 49-year-old Cage plays the title role, a hard-drinking ex-con whose struggle to maintain control of his life is undermined by his instincts to help a boy, portrayed by Tye Sheridan, living under the crux of an alcoholic father. The film is among 20 vying for the coveted Golden Lion, awarded Sept. 7.
