BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq's parliament speaker is warning that the escape this week of hundreds of prison inmates will make the country's security situation even worse.

The inmates escaped during raids on two prisons outside Baghdad -- including the notorious Abu Ghraib prison. Al-Qaida has claimed responsibility.

The parliament speaker says the latest reports indicate that more than 500 prisoners escaped. According to Interpol, many of them were senior members of al-Qaida in Iraq, including some who faced the death penalty.

Today's warning from the parliament speaker came hours after militants carried out a bold ambush on truckers north of the capital, killing 14 people. In a city north of Baghdad, meanwhile, officials say militants shot and killed three off-duty soldiers as they were leaving a restaurant. And police say gunmen shot and killed four people in three separate incidents in Baghdad.
