JERUSALEM (AP) — A Palestinian prisoner who refused food for eight months has ended his hunger strike.

His lawyer and the Israeli military say the prisoner ended his fast after reaching a deal with Israel for early release.

Samer Issawi (SAM'-ur ee-SAH'-wee) began refusing food in August to protest his re-arrest a month earlier. He became a symbol of the Palestinian struggle against Israel, and some demonstrations over his case turned violent.

His lawyer says Israeli military prosecutors agreed to release him after he serves another eight months. According to the lawyer, Issawi ended the hunger strike in the presence of his sister and uncle.

The Israeli military confirms the deal, but it's providing no further details.

Issawi was initially sentenced in 2002 to 26 years in prison for his role in a series of shooting attacks targeting police cars and students at Jerusalem's Hebrew University.
