DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Schools and businesses are closed and transportation has been disrupted across Bangladesh as hard-line Islamic groups protesting a film that denigrates the Prophet Muhammad enforce a general strike.

Thousands of security officials have been deployed in the capital, Dhaka, to try to avert violence during Sunday's strike.

The strike was called in response to police action Saturday against supporters of the groups who rallied in Dhaka to denounce the film, which was produced in the United States.

Dozens of people were arrested and scores injured Saturday as protesters clashed with police. Several vehicles were burned, including a police van.

No violence was immediately reported during Sunday's strike.
