KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan President Hamid Karzai (HAH'-mihd KAHR'-zeye) is urging his nation to rally behind his push for peace negotiations with insurgents.

Speaking at a memorial for a former leader who was assassinated while trying to broker talks with the Taliban, Karzai said despite persistent violence, all Afghans should "strive for peace."

Former President Burhanuddin Rabbani (boor-HAHN'-uh-deen ruh-BAH'-nee) was killed a year ago today by a suicide bomber posing as an emissary from the insurgents.

Today's ceremony came as attacks in three different provinces killed four police, two security guards and two civilians.

Yesterday, a suicide bomber rammed a car packed with explosives into a minibus carrying foreign workers to the airport in Kabul, killing at least 12 people. A militant group claiming responsibility called that attack vengeance for the insult to Islam from a video that ridicules the Prophet Muhammad.
